Our History

The club was formed in 1988, like many other Serbian community groups, at a Slava (this one was the Subotic family saint's day festivities).

Branislav Mitrovic was talking to Mirko Kovacevic and his friend Stel Verisan about his passion of playing golf. The spark was lit and interest ignited among them to play regularly between themselves. Others from the Serbian Orthodox community were also interested, and taking account of Serbian politics of the day they formed the St. Nicholas Golden Eagle Social Golf Club as many of the players were based in the St. Nicholas Serbian Orthodox Church-School Community.

Apart from having fun playing golf, the Club offered fellow Serbians a neutral venue to meet and socialize and strengthen community ties. To learn the game so we can compete against other clubs; To enjoy ourselves with fellow Serbians; Meet new people from different areas of the community; Have a once or twice a year weekend away golfing and playing in competitions with fellow Serbs from other states. Our main aim is to promote cultural continuity in the Serbian community.

The first president was Milorad Bodiroza (as he was the then president of the Blacktown Church-School Community). Secretary and captain was Branislav Mitrovic and the treasurer, Ljubo Subotic.

The youngest player David Bodirosa (8yr), the oldest Milorad Kupresanin (62yr) and the church paid for prizes (1 ball for each prize).

The club played irregularly and in 1999 there was a new membership drive. We played on better courses and this time charged an additional $5.00 to cover for prizes as the church committee did not see the need to be further involved. This club was affectionately referred to as the Golden Eagles. The club at this time had the now well known blue t-shirts with the Club badge patches made for members to wear when playing, to improve the clubs standing.

At that time Branislav Mitrovic stood down as the then President and the next leadership team were installed.

In 2001 there was another membership drive as more people were interested in joining and a few fun games were organized for players who had never played before, to introduce them to the challenges and fun of the game. Many of these new players had never played as up until recently there were no golf courses in Serbia or the traditional Serbian homelands of the Balkans. But once introduced, many such as Milorad Lekanic, took to the game with a passion. Given the wider community support that the Club was receiving, it was decided to shorten the Club's name to the Golden Eagles Social Golf Club.

In late 2003 the Club's name was amended to Golden Eagles Serbian Social Golf Club. Closely followed in 2004 by the launch of Serbiangolfclub.com - the club's new online home providing you with club news, the latest results and more.
